Research about technology for people with dementia has shown that successful communication with relatives (and others) is a central aspect of maintaining a high quality of life. Technology can support this communication. Such support is the focus of the study Communication, which aims at designing and implementing several technical solutions in a co-design setting. Providing digital contents as well as creating innovative human-computer interaction considering aesthetic as well as social aspects is central in the design.

To account for the needs and contexts of our future users we engage people with dementia as well as their (informal) caregivers in the design process. This will ensure the acceptance of developed solutions and a positive impact on the quality of life of the users. At the same time we investigate which methods are suited to involve people with dementia in design processes, also considering ethical aspects.

Sub-project »Erinnerungsspeicher (Memory Storage)«

This project aims at developing technical solutions to improve the communication of people with dementia and their caregivers. A central aspect of the development is the preservation of identity of the person with dementia through consideration of memories and the biography of the person. Focus of the current development is on tangible objects that are enhanced with biographically significant digital content such as video, photos or music. The objects will be easy to manipulate by people with dementia and will trigger memories when manipulated. The objects will thereby allow the person with dementia to retrieve memories and keep them alive, but also to provide triggers for communication with other people.
