Evaluation

In the study Security as well as the study Communication an evaluation will take place. Both evaluations are to be carried out concomitantly and will involve people with dementia as well as their relatives in at least two interview situations.

In the study Security we will investigate the technical system with regard to its impact on the quality of life of people with dementia and the reduction of the burden on informal caregivers. Furthermore, we will explore whether a basic set of technology could empower people to remain in their own apartment for a longer time.  We are also interested in the factors that will lead to a successful deployment of the technology. To investigate these questions the existing system will be installed in several private households. We will conduct several interviews with people with dementia and their informal caregivers: one in the beginning and one at the end of the intervention. The evaluation of the technology comprises also aspects of usability to mitigate potential barriers of the acceptance of the system.

Similarly, the study Communication is also focused on the impact on the quality of life of people with dementia and their (informal) caregivers. Since technical solutions are currently still being developed, the evaluation is focused on different methods for user involvement in the design process in this case. We are investigating under which conditions the involvement of people with dementia in different design stages (from ideation to prototype testing) can be done considering also ethical aspects. User-centred Design and Co-Design serve as a basis for active involvement of stakeholder experiences. We will conduct focus groups, workshops, participant observation and interviews with people with dementia as well as their formal and informal caregivers.
